The Hou 13 Junior Tandem is an amazing canoe, its perfect for teaching smaller paddlers how to get the most from their paddling, or just great fun for the kids to play in. Either way this canoe is a heap of fun.
The hōu 13 is based on a Peterborough Canoe Company design classic. The original design spec was a boat that would carry ‘smallish’ loads, be relatively light and easy to portage, but would track well and paddle easily on open water, lakes, rivers and low grade white water.
By setting this canoe up with a unique junior set up including two seats, we have a perfect canoe for the junior crews. Its a bit like riding a bike, teaching juniors to cycle on a full sized bike is crazy, and so is teaching them to paddle in a full size canoe. By putting folks in boats that are right for their size they can feel when a paddle stroke is working, and when its not. When you get things right with the paddle the boat responds making learning easier. This will not be felt in a canoe that is too big for you.
The ‘baby Prospector’ style shape has fine entry on the bow and stern, classic re-curve, moderate tumble home and the classic open canoe look. Complemented by a shallow v hull that gives good initial as well as great secondary stability and assists the junior paddling experience as well. This canoe will really help give the juniors the confidence they need to enjoy and progress with paddling.
Also with the reduced width on this canoe the juniors will be able to keep a pace with adult paddlers much more easily.
With the boat being relatively small it also makes it very easy to handle off the water, loading onto the car etc is as easy as it gets!
