What is this document…?
The Team at Hōu Canoes wants to help the paddle sport community get people paddling again. This new part to our operation aims to help clubs, hire operators, outdoor centres, as well as individuals to go paddling safely in the ‘new normal’ world. This document is provided as a resource only and is not an official guideline or operating protocol. It is however what we believe to be the best collection of relevant information currently available to paddlers. So how does it allow us to help you?
We are trying to help initially in several ways.
Firstly, by collating relevant information and resources into a single reference document. This document will be regularly updated and re-circulated. The document will also discuss best operational practices in the varying and complex environments related to paddle sport. We have a team of experienced paddlers that includes technical advisors, coaches, guides and health care professionals working to keep this information and advice up to date.
Secondly, we are looking to offer a range of equipment that your operation/club can choose from to help carry out best practice for ensuring the safety of members, staff and customers alike. This includes both equipment and specialist sanitising products that won’t damage your gear.

Lastly, we are also happy to help as a resource for all relevant questions and to help with everything from the basics to help in updating risk assessment documents and operating procedures. We have a team of technical advisers available to act in various professional capacities ensuring your operation complies with current safety legislation of all types.
By working together, we can continue to grow our industry by helping more people to go paddling more often, in safety.

Operational Best Practice.
As we all know paddlesports are a great way to stay active and have huge mental health benefits, however, they are risk assumed sports.
We are all desperate to get afloat and should remember that not everyone has the same skill set as ourselves. We have a responsibly to paddle within our limits and protect ourselves and the rescue/medical services that may need to respond if we mess up.
To outsiders paddlesports can often look ‘easy’ and therefore we all have a responsibility to not only inspire them to participate in our sport but to help them understand the full risks involved.
It is important to remember that during this time decisions are being made at many levels by the devolved governments as well as centrally.

Sport’s National Governing bodies are continually reviewing and updating their policies and procedures, these decisions are being made by home nations and not at UK level therefore it is important that you check the recommendations/regulations for your home nation, but if you intend to travel and cross boarders, that you check and respect the regulations and advise there as well. Best Practice Operational Procedures Working.
Clients should be encouraged to follow the governments guidance on antiviral Personal Protective Equipment. Facecovering have been proven to help minimise the spread of viruses and should be considered. Note: Gloves do not stop the spread if warn continually
Personal hygiene is important to stop the spread of any virus, so clients should be encouraged to wash hands with soap and water (or Alcohol Based Hand Rub AHBR) before and after paddlesports activities. They should also wash hands before eating or drinking, even if this is during the paddlesports activity. The residual film the soap creates on hands acts as a barrier to breakdown the shell of the virus.
Paddlesports Personal Protective Equipment should be worn throughout, clients should take advice on how to fit this to themselves from staff. If they are struggling to fit paddlesports PPE, then they should ensure that both themselves and the member of staff is wearing antiviral PPE before getting physical assistance from staff.
Clients should ensure that they remain at a social distance, 2 meters, from anyone who is not within their household/social bubble.
Where possible clients should complete all paperwork/booking processes prior to arrival and make cashless payments, preferably prior to arrival via a secure payment process.

On the water

Staff should follow the governments guidance on Antiviral Personal Protective Equipment. Employers have the legal responsibility to provide any items that are classified as PPE.
Face covering and single use gloves have been proven to help minimise the spread of viruses and should be available, staff should consider wearing these items whenever they are working with clients or moving equipment that is in public or high-risk areas.
Personal hygiene is the most important action to stop the spread of any virus, so staff should be encouraged to wash hands with soap and water (or ABHR) before and after changing work tasks and leading activities. They should also wash hands before eating or drinking, even if this is during on water activity.
Paddlesports Personal Protective Equipment should be worn throughout, staff should give clear guidance to clients on how to fit this to themselves.
If clients are struggling to fit Paddlesports PPE, then ensure both staff and clients are wearing Antiviral PPE before making physical contact.

On the water
Cleaning equipment is more important than ever, we as paddlesports practitioners have a responsibility to ourselves, our colleges and clients to ensure that equipment if fit for purpose.
Dunk, Wash, Rinse, Dry.
After each time a piece of equipment has been used a simple process should be followed to ensure the item is clean and virus free. This should be the same for staff equipment however practically will likely dictate that staff only wash their personal equipment daily.
Crafts & Paddles.
Check, Clean, Dry.
The check, clean, dry process has hopefully been common process for many to minimise the spread of invasive non-native species and is a great starting point for ensuring we stop the spread of viruses.
Exped related requirements;
Wilderness paddlesports expeditions are extremally rewarding however there are often additional challenges faced in terms of hygiene.
We are putting a number of products together to try and help the commercial outfitters to manage groups. Product release details will follow soon.
Due to the remote nature of the areas we often expedition in, many of us chose to substitute ABHRs in place of hot water and soap, however although ABHR does clean hands, there’s no real substitute for washing hands with soap and water particularly before eating & drinking.
Creating running hot water in the wilderness can be a challenge but this has been made possible with the new Hōu Canoes Mucky Hand Wishy Washy Station! Which allows you to get hot running water in the wilderness.

Many of us love the fast and light approach to expeditioning, but when we have canoes, we can take much much more.
We’ve developed a range of kitchen items from fold up tables to lift your expedition food off the ground, washing up systems to make sure you can get those dirty dishes clean easily and systematically, just like at home.

Disposal of PPE.
Current PPE disposal theories rely on the users safely disposing of PPE into designated waste bins that are then double bagged and labelled appropriately. These bagged items should then be quarantined for 72 hours before disposal into the general waste system. Please be aware of any regional or updated advice.
